According to lore, an Italian immigrant baked coal-fired brick oven pizzas in a small Brooklyn bakery and transported them to Manhattan to be sold. At the time, regulations made it impossible to construct coal oven in Manhattan, so New Yorkers eagerly crossed the Brooklyn Bridge to eat their new favorite food.
